CVC Thermoset Specialties, an Emerald Performance Materials company, offers Hypro 1300X33LC and Hypro 1300X43LC VTBNX. The two new methacrylate-functional reactive liquid polymers (RLPs) are a part of the company’s Hypro product line of 100% solids, functional polybutadiene and acrylonitrile-butadiene co-polymers. These liquid rubbers have carboxyl, hydroxyl, epoxy, glycidyl ester, methacrylate and amine terminal groups, which will cross-link into thermoset polymer systems and substantially enhance key mechanical properties in the end-use applications. Hypro 1300X33LC and Hypro 1300X43LC VTBNX are methacrylate terminated co-polymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile. They feature an innovative breakthrough with superior viscosity stability and lighter color than the previous generation of Hypro VTBNXs, according to the company. This innovation extends the shelf-life and processing window and expands the use to applications where color is important. Hypro methacrylate-functional RLPs improve the toughness, impact resistance, flexibility and low temperature properties, in acrylic structural adhesives, sealants and coatings and in vinyl-ester or methyl methacrylate composites. The methacrylate-terminal groups on the RLP contain a vinyl bond which enables the product to react into and to become a permanent part of the cured polymer matrix. In acrylic structural adhesives, the addition of Hypro VTBNX RLPs can increase the impact resistance up to tenfold, fatigue resistance three- to six-fold, and T-peel and lap shear particularly at low temperatures from two- to five-fold over unmodified systems. In acrylic sealants and coatings, modification with Hypro VTBNX RLPs will improve adhesive strength and impact resistance, and increase elongation at standard temperatures and especially at low temperatures. In composites, these products act as reactive tougheners and compatibilizers for fiber reinforcement in vinyl-ester systems and for silica reinforcement in polymethyl methacrylate PMMA composites. Modification with Hypro VTBNX RLPs will also increase impact resistance and T-peel adhesion with metal.
